About this destination
Salton Sea is a saline lake located in the Imperial and Coachella valleys in Southern California, United States. It was formed by accident in 1905 when the Colorado River broke through its banks and flowed into the Salton Sink basin. Over the years, the Salton Sea has fluctuated in size and salinity, and has become an important bird habitat.
The lake covers about 343 square miles and is the largest lake in California. It is also one of the saltiest lakes in the world, with a salinity level higher than that of the Pacific Ocean. The lake's high levels of salt, paired with agricultural runoff, have caused various environmental problems in the area, including fish and bird die-offs, and odor issues.
Despite its environmental challenges, the Salton Sea attracts tourists for activities like fishing, boating, and birdwatching. The lake is surrounded by state and federal parks, which offer camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities.
