About this destination
Lake McDonough is a man-made reservoir located in Barkhamsted, Connecticut. It was created in 1940 when the Barkhamsted Reservoir was constructed by the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC). The lake covers an area of about 450 acres, and its maximum depth is 50 feet, while the average depth is 25 feet.
Lake McDonough is a popular destination for outdoor recreation activities such as fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, and swimming. It is best known for its crystal-clear water, sandy beaches, and scenic hiking trails. The lake is stocked with trout and bass, making it a great spot for fishing enthusiasts.
The MDC manages Lake McDonough and its surrounding area, including a recreation area with picnic shelters, a playground, and hiking trails that wind around the lake. There are also rustic cabins and campsites available for rent.
Aside from outdoor activities, the lake also offers a vibrant history. Back in the early 19th century, the area was known for having numerous small mills. The Barkhamsted Reservoir was created primarily to provide water for the growing metropolitan area, which made it possible for people living in cities to have access to clean drinking water. Today, it is one of the most significant reservoirs in the state of Connecticut.
