About this destination
Walter F George Lake is a reservoir located on the Chattahoochee River in southwestern Georgia and eastern Alabama. It was created in 1963 by the construction of the Walter F George Dam, which is operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
The lake is named after Walter F George, a United States senator from Georgia who served from 1922 to 1957. The lake covers a total surface area of 45,180 acres, with a shoreline that stretches for more than 640 miles.
Walter F George Lake is a popular destination for boating, fishing, swimming, and other water-based activities. It is home to a wide variety of fish species, including largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and striped bass.
In addition to recreational activities, the lake also serves important functions for flood control, downstream water supply, and hydroelectric power generation.
