The lake was created in 1935 by the damming of Sugar Creek to provide a source of drinking water for the city of Springfield. The lake has a surface area of 4,234 acres and a maximum depth of 53 feet. It is surrounded by parkland, including numerous hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, and boat launches. The lake is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and water sports, with fish species including largemouth bass, catfish, walleye, and crappie. The lake also hosts annual events such as the Lake Springfield Open Bass Fishing Tournament and the Lake Springfield Dragon Boat Festival.
