The lake is fed by the Black River and was created in 1948 by the damming of the river. The lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating, swimming, and hiking. Clearwater Lake State Park is located on the southeast side of the lake and offers campgrounds, picnic areas, trails, and boat ramps.
