About this destination
Hebgen Lake is a large freshwater lake located in southwest Montana, about 17 miles west of West Yellowstone. It covers an area of approximately 12,000 acres and reaches a maximum depth of 190 feet. The lake is fed by several small streams and surrounded by mountains and forests, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Fishing, boating, camping, and hiking are all popular activities in the area. The lake is best known for its trout fishing, with rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout all found in its waters. The area around Hebgen Lake was also the site of a massive earthquake in 1959, which caused a landslide that blocked the Madison River and created a new lake known as Earthquake Lake.
