University Lake is a man-made lake located in Carrboro, North Carolina. It is owned and managed by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The lake is situated off of NC-54, west of Carrboro, and covers an area of 85 acres. It was created in 1939 to serve as the university's primary water source. Today, it serves as a popular spot for fishing, kayaking, and hiking. The lake is surrounded by a natural area park which includes several trails, picnic areas, and a boat ramp. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill also uses the lake for research and educational purposes. For example, students in the university's environmental science program use the lake to study water quality and aquatic ecosystems.
