About this destination
Elwood Reservoir is a man-made lake located in the south-central part of Nebraska, United States. It was created in the 1950s by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation by building a dam on the excess waters of the Platte River. The reservoir covers an area of about 1,800 acres and has a capacity of 50,500 acre-feet.
Elwood Reservoir is used for multiple purposes, including flood control, irrigation, and recreation. It provides water for irrigation to farmers in the surrounding area and helps control flooding downstream. The lake is also popular among anglers and boaters, who enjoy fishing for catfish, crappie, walleye, and other species found in the lake.
The reservoir is surrounded by a state recreation area that features several campsites, boat ramps, and picnic areas. The recreation area is managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing in the area, in addition to fishing and boating opportunities on the lake.
