Hugh Butler Lake is a reservoir located near Trenton, Nebraska, in the central part of the state. The lake covers 1,277 acres and has a shoreline of approximately 10 miles. It was created in 1951 by the damming of the Republican River for flood prevention, irrigation, and recreational purposes. The lake is named after Hugh Butler, a former U.S. Senator from Nebraska. It is a popular destination for fishing, boating, camping, hiking, and nature observation. The lake is stocked with a variety of fish species, including walleye, catfish, bass, bluegill, and crappie. The surrounding area features several campgrounds and picnic areas, as well as a hiking trail that runs around the lake. The lake is managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
