About this destination
Heron Lake is a reservoir located in northern New Mexico, USA. It was created by the construction of Heron Dam on the Rio Chama in 1971 and is the fourth-largest lake in the state. The lake provides numerous recreation opportunities including camping, fishing, boating, and wildlife watching. It is also a popular destination for birdwatchers as it is designated as an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. The surrounding area offers hiking trails, picnic areas, and scenic drives. The lake is located approximately 20 miles southwest of Chama, NM.
