About this destination

Wanaksink Lake is a small lake located in the town of Mamakating, in Sullivan County, New York. It covers an area of approximately 103 acres and has a maximum depth of 18 feet. The lake is fed by several small streams, and its outflow forms the beginning of the Little Shawangunk Kill, which flows into the Neversink River. Wanaksink Lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and swimming. It is stocked annually with trout and also has populations of bass, pickerel, and panfish. The lake has a public boat launch and a swimming beach, and there are picnic areas and a playground nearby. In addition to recreational activities, Wanaksink Lake serves as a water supply for the City of Middletown. The Wanaksink Lake Dam, which was built in 1907, creates a 38-acre reservoir and regulates the lake's water level. The lake and its surrounding area are also home to a variety of wildlife, including bald eagles, ospreys, beavers, and muskrats.
