Oregon
About this destination
Lake Owyhee is a large reservoir located in southeastern Oregon, United States. It is named after a member of the early 19th-century fur trapping expedition, Peter Skene Ogden, who named it after the Hawaiian word "Owyhee" meaning "sandwich," in honor of the Sandwich Islands, now known as Hawaii. Lake Owyhee was created by the construction of the Owyhee Dam on the Owyhee River in 1932.
The lake is an important recreational area, offering opportunities for boating, fishing, camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing. It is known for its abundant smallmouth bass and rainbow trout that make it a popular fishing destination.
Surrounded by steep canyon walls, the lake's clear blue waters are also a popular spot for water sports and swimming. The area around the lake is home to various wildlife, including bald eagles, pronghorn antelope, and coyotes.
Lake Owyhee State Park is located on the eastern shore of the lake and offers camping, picnic areas, and boat ramps. There are also several other campgrounds and recreation areas around the lake, including the Rome Recreation Area and Succor Creek State Natural Area.
Lake Owyhee is a unique and beautiful destination, offering visitors a chance to experience Oregon's stunning natural beauty and abundant recreational opportunities.
