Lake Maury is a man-made lake located in Newport News, Virginia. It was created in 1931 by the construction of the dam on the Warwick River. The lake covers an area of about 175 acres and is named after Matthew Fontaine Maury, a famous oceanographer and meteorologist who was born in Virginia. Lake Maury is surrounded by the Mariners' Museum Park, which features walking trails, picnic areas, a playground, and a museum dedicated to the history of seafaring and naval warfare. The lake is also used for fishing, boating, and kayaking.
