About this destination

Lake Whitehurst is a small freshwater lake located in Norfolk, Virginia. It covers an area of approximately 33 acres and has a maximum depth of about 12 feet. The lake is named in honor of Captain Harry Whitehurst, a former city council member who was instrumental in the creation of the Norfolk Airport. Lake Whitehurst is popular among local anglers, who come to fish for largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and other species. The lake is also used for boating and kayaking, and there are several boat ramps and a fishing pier available for public use. In addition to recreational activities, Lake Whitehurst serves as a backup water supply for the city of Norfolk, and it is maintained by the Norfolk Department of Utilities. The lake and surrounding wetlands provide important habitat for a variety of wildlife, including waterfowl, herons, turtles, and beavers.
