Lake Pontchartrain is a large brackish water lake located in southeastern Louisiana, United States. It covers an area of approximately 630 square miles (1,600 sq km) and is connected to the Gulf of Mexico by the Rigolets Pass and Lake Borgne. The lake is bounded by several major cities of Louisiana, including New Orleans, Metairie, and Slidell, and is a popular spot for recreational activities such as boating, fishing, and swimming. The causeway, which spans 23.83 miles (38.35 km), connects the north and south shores of Lake Pontchartrain. The lake is also an important ecosystem, providing habitat for numerous aquatic species, including shrimp, crab, and oysters.
